Residential Market Overview

During 2002 (the most recent year that data is available), steel framing had 1.5 % of the total residential market in the United States and 2% of the Canadian residential market. In certain geographic regions, steel framing had gained significant participation:

  • California: 8% · Texas: 3%
  • Florida: 7 % (including 47% of homes in South Florida)
  • Hawaii: 40 % (including 72 % of homes on O'ahu)

Commercial/Institutional Overview

A study of the nonresidential market to determine market share for steel framing by application and type of structure was completed in 2003. It found that in 2002, steel framing was used in 47 % of exterior walls, 81 % of interior walls, 13% of floors, and 4% of roofs. Steel framing had also gained significant usage in many types of buildings, including:

  • Office and Bank Buildings 53 %
  • Laboratories 45 %
  • Dormitories 49 %
  • Hospital and Health Treatment 53 %
  • Public Buildings 53 %
  • Apartments/Assisted Living 52 %
