AISI Endorses New Edition Of Textbook As A Leading Reference On Cold-Formed Steel Design

Washington, DC – The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has endorsed the just-published Fourth Edition of “Cold-Formed Steel Design” by Wei-Wen Yu, Ph.D., P.E. and Roger A. LaBoube, Ph.D., P.E. as a leading new reference on cold-formed steel design. The textbook includes the most important developments in cold-formed steel design theory and practice that have taken place over the past two decades. “Cold-Formed Steel Design” was published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. and is available for purchase at a discounted price on the Wei-Wen Yu Center for Cold-Formed Steel Structures website at

Drawing upon decades of experience in cold-formed steel design, research, teaching and the development of design specifications, Drs. Yu and LaBoube emphasize the behavior of cold-formed steel and its practical application in design, construction and manufacturing. The textbook is a valuable resource for structural engineers, manufacturers, construction managers, and architects as well as students and researchers in structural engineering, architectural engineering, construction engineering, and related disciplines.

“Drs. Yu and LaBoube have provided a valuable service to design professionals and students by drafting and publishing this extensive reference on the structural behavior of cold-formed steel members and connections,” Jay Larson, P.E., F. ASCE, managing director, AISI Construction Technical Program, said. “The textbook explores the rationale behind the North American design provisions, including the Direct Strength Method, which was formally adopted in the North American design specifications in 2004 as an alternative to the traditional Effective Width Method.

“As the desire for ‘green’ building increases, this textbook will serve as an excellent reference for all those who design and work with cold-formed steel, helping them to bring design solutions that optimize material usage and allow for sustainable buildings,” Larson said.

The Center for Cold-Formed Steel Structures (CCFSS) was established at the University of Missouri-Rolla (now Missouri University of Science & Technology) in May 1990 under an initial grant received from AISI. In addition to AISI, the Center’s sponsors now include the Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute of the Steel Framing Alliance, the Metal Building Manufacturers Association, the Rack Manufacturers Institute, the Steel Deck Institute and the Steel Stud Manufacturers Association. In 2000, the Center was renamed for its Founding Director, Dr. Wei-Wen Yu. The Center provides an integrated approach for handling research, teaching, engineering education, technical services, and professional activity.

AISI’s codes and standards work is conducted under the Construction Market Council of AISI’s Steel Market Development Institute, which oversees the industry’s investment in advancing the competitive use of steel by meeting the demands of the marketplace.

AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice. AISI also plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology. AISI is comprised of 23 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and 138 associate and affiliate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry. AISI's member companies represent over 75 percent of both U.S. and North American steel capacity. For more news about steel and its applications, view AISI’s website at
