CFSEI Announces Board Of Directors
Roster For 2008-2009
The Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute (CFSEI) announced
during its Annual Meeting last month the election of
its 2008-2009 officers and newly elected directors.
Jeff Klaiman, P.E., principal and vice president of
Specialty Engineering for ADTEK Engineers Inc. in Fairfax,
Va., was installed as the new Board President, while
John Matsen, P.E., Matsen Ford Design Associates, Inc.,
was elected vice president. The CFSEI is the technical
institute of the Steel Framing Alliance.
Mr. Klaiman joined CFSEI’s Board in 2005 and
served as vice president from 2007-08. He follows Jeff
Ellis, P.E., S.E., Simpson Strong-Tie, Inc., who continues
to serve as immediate past president. Mr. Klaiman also
is the current president of the Mid-Atlantic Steel Framing
Alliance and serves on several committees of the American
Iron & Steel Institute’s (AISI) Committee
on Specifications and Committee on Framing Standards.
“Under the leadership of my predecessors, Jeff
Ellis and Ben Schafer, CFSEI developed a comprehensive
strategy for the future and re-tooled many of its programs
to better meet the needs of engineers interested in
cold-formed steel framing,” Mr. Klaiman said.
“The Institute is making major strides in the
enhancement of its technical resources and programs.
I’m proud to have served on the Board during this
period of forward transitioning, and am eager to continue
these efforts on behalf of Institute members.”
Three engineers distinguished for their knowledge
and expertise in cold-formed steel framing were also
elected by CFSEI members to serve two-year terms on
the Institute’s Board:
- Bill Babich, P.E.
– is the chief engineer of the TrusSteel Division
of ITW Building Component Group, Inc. in Haines City,
Fla., and has been involved in the cold-formed steel
truss industry for more than 13 years. In addition
to CFSEI, he has also been involved with WTCA Cold-Formed
Steel Council, American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI)
Committee on Framing Standards (COFS), and the Steel
Framing Alliance. Mr. Babich currently holds positions
as chairman for the AISI/COFS Truss Subcommittee and
is an inaugural member of the CFSEI Florida Chapter
board of directors.
- Richard B. Haws, P.E.,
As department manager of Technical Services for NUCONSTEEL
in Denton, Texas, Mr. Haws is charged with overall
management, strategic direction, integration and guidance
of NUCONSTEEL’s varied technical efforts and
organizations. He has worked in the cold-formed steel
industry for several years, including six years as
the AISI’s manager of Light Construction where
he developed resources to enable the markets for steel
framing. Currently, he also serves as chairman of
the AISI COFS and vice chairman of the AISI Committee
on Specifications.
- Sutton Stephens, Ph.D., P.E.,
S.E., is an associate professor at Kansas State
University (KSU) in Manhattan, Kan. Dr. Stephens joined
KSU in 2001 as Assistant Professor and was promoted
to Associate Professor in 2006. His area of research
is in cold-formed steel and he is a member of the
AISI COFS. Dr. Stephens earned an M.S. Degree in Civil
Engineering in 1999 and a Ph.D. in 2002 at the Missouri
University of Science and Technology (formerly University
of Missouri – Rolla), and was previously a consulting
structural engineer.
